Clean out those ears!! Review and giveaway

Edit** The winner is Jodyjohn! But don't worry if you didn't win, you can buy one for $20, and it is well worth it!
Dr. Mom was so impressed with all your enthusiasm that they have given me two more to give away and also another blogger will soon be doing a giveaway, also. Check Sassyfrazz for updates, and I will be doing another giveaway soon. If you subscribe to my feed, you won't miss it.

Ear infections are not all that common around here, but when they do happen we have very different symptoms on our kids. Hope-Anne has no symptom until it bursts. Trinity has been that way a bit, too, but sometimes she will show signs of grumpiness, but we don't know why. Samuel pulls at his ears and doesn't sleep well.
Donnie lost most of his hearing and had ringing in his ears. And the most annoying part was that he could hear everything super loud that goes on in his body, like chewing or walking! He was diagnosed with an ear infection, but nothing would make it go away. Even 3 months of antibiotics. He has had his ear drum drained and wax cleaned out, but still his hearing is going away again.

We got tired of the copays! A pediatrician taught me years ago when Kaytlin had chronic infections how to tell when to go in. But I haven't had a quality otoscope in all these years.

Well, now I have found one! And not only is it excellent quality, it is also very affordable. It is the Dr. Mom Otoscope. It is heavy duty, being made with a metal body, with an LED light that doesn't have a filament to burn out. It has a lifetime warranty, so if the light or anything else stops working they will fix it or replace it. So what is affordable? How about the price of a typical co-pay? $19.97 with $4.95 shipping. Just a bit over $25! How many copays will it save you by not having to run in to get your child checked out?

We have been playing with ours for a few weeks and it has been amazing! There is a learning curve, but mostly it has been easy. We can see all the waxy buildups that are causing hearing difficulties, we can see ear infections, and we can see when the cold has not led to an ear infection. The Dr. Mom Otoscope has helped us a lot with Donnie's ear troubles. We have been able to see that the medications he was on were not working. He had no pain, so that was our only indication, besides the hearing loss.

The scope comes with a picture of what you may see in the ear. That way you will know what you are looking at.
The scope has a 4x magnification. We look in the ear and see it FILLED with wax. Oh, you would not believe it! But we flushed it out and found that the wax was actually so small that we could barely find it! You really can get a good look at things.
I highly recommend getting an otoscope. Even as you are aging, it comes in really handy. We use it for our parents, too.
You can get a good deal by buying two otoscopes and getting free shipping! It comes with three sizes of Re-usable Dr Mom Speculas to look in your ears.

Dr. Mom sent me an extra Otoscope to give away to one of my readers!
Please visit their website HERE and tell me one thing that you were surprised to learn or why you think this will help your family.
The giveaway will end March 30th.
Anonymous commentors are welcome. I will be announcing my winner on my blog, via email, and on Prizey Winners. Please leave a nickname that is unique if you are not willing to leave an email address so that when you look on Prizey Winners you will know it is you. Thanks!!

  1. wow, I am first! I hope the random meter loves me, because with three boys with chronic infections, this would really come in handy! Since we have been through this so much, you would think I would know all of the info on how to tell when it is an infection and when meds are needed, but I found the information on this site so helpful that I have it bookmarked to my desktop now for reference! Thank you so much:)

  3. I would love to win. This would help my family, because my daughters inherited only about one thing from my husband...ear wax. nice huh?

  4. My kids (4) always seem to have earaches, it would be good to know if its an infection first instead of wasting a trip to the doctor and money just for the doc to say no their ears are fine, most of the time ending up going back later since we KNOW an ear infection is comming on...If I dont win I plan on buying one tho.

I didn't know that you could put olive oil drops in your ears to help with ear wax. hmm.

  6. Well, I didn't know there was a difference between an ear infection and ear fluid. This would help us determine if my daughter just has wax or a true ear infection.

  7. My kids never seem to 'act' sick, but get super cranky, with no outward signs of being ill. Something like this would be an awesome help to see if there is something going on with their ears, when I think that might be the case. I have one terrible time getting appts where we are at, so it would be a godsend to know for sure if we were dealing with something like an ear infection when we finally manage to get an appt.

  9. My daughter had reoccurent ear infections for years! We were literally in the dr's office at least twice a month just to get her ears checked. I would love to have this at home. I always hoped I would have one to save me on my dr's bills when my little one was going through this. Now it would be nice to make sure my youngest doesn't have the same problems as his sister.

  10. Hi, My boys have had ear tubes twice and still get ear infections! I didn't know a tool like this one existed. I also know that too much ear wax can cause vertigo in adults! Please enter me in your drawing. Thanks,Cindi

  12. Wow! I was suprised to see what an infected ear actually looks like. I have 4 kids, one of which gets ear infections easily. I also have a daughter who is a bit of a drama queen. I have took her many times to the dr only to learn that her ears are fine and she just has a cold. This would be so handy to have.

  19. Oh, I would really love to win this! My son has had several ear infections, one which landed us in the ER the night we brought his sister home from the hospital. I'd love to be able to keep an eye on things in there so I could intervene before things got bad. Thanks!

  20. Wow, I didn't know they sold these to the general public. For any parent who has stayed up all night with a child suffering from an ear ache this would be a great tool to have! I've found tylenol and warm compresses on the ear helps... but it doesn't cure the ache... unfortunately.
Thanks for a very useful giveaway!

I have been to the doctor so many times thinking my children had ear infections only to find out their ears were clear....and their pulling on the ears was related to teething! We have no copays....we have a high deductible insurance, so too many of these trips add up! This would be so valuable around here! Thank you! ( meg.wilson@gmail.com )

  28. My daughter just suffered two ear infections (simultaneous) while we were on a family vacation. She was in such distress and we had no idea it was an ear infection because she'd never had one before. I can imagine it would be extremely convenient and helpful for our peace of mind to have an otoscope around. Especially since we have another baby on the way due in June.

  41. My mom had an otoscope growing up, but I haven't been able to find a good one to use with my kids. I bought a cheapo one at Walgreen's but it fell apart completely. I would really love to have this! $20 a pop on a co-pay because the baby is pulling at her ears is getting expensive. I think we've probably spent $200 on suspected ear infections in 2 and a half years, and she's only had one!!

If I don't win, I think I'm going to buy one. Thanks for telling us about it!

  43. I would love to win this since I had ear infections ALL the time as a child. In fact, I had tubes in and out of my ears 3 times & it was the worst. And believe it or not, I (a 27 year old woman) was diagnosed with a major ear infection two weeks ago, so I could even use this now! I think it's neat that they include different attachments, as well as the pictures so that you know what you might see in there. Thanks for the giveaway & take care!

  44. My boys and my husband are wax mongers. I have never seen so much wax. Thanks for the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I always thought batting or pulling their ears was a good indication of an infection, but, I guess not for younger babes.

My son suffered years with ear infections. The first time he was a few months old. He went to sleep one day and would not wake up except to take a few sips of food, and hardly woke for that. No fever at all. When I took him to the doc about 2 days later, he was not getting enough food, and still would not wake up for anything!

I laid him on the table and the doc says..so what is wrong? I started crying since my husband had a history of coma's as a child, and I was worried out of my mind! I pick up Mason's arm and it just dropped to the table, Mason did not even stir. I tried to wake him...he would not wake up!
No fever I said through my tears.

So, the doc took his temp and he did have a low grade fever...99.9. Then Doc looked in his ears and found that both ears were flaming red and he showed me. Doc was beside himself that Mason was not screaming his head off in pain! Me too!! He had never seen this happen before in a baby or child. Mason was practically comatose! I wonder if this ever happened to anyone else, I have not seen or heard of anyone yet.

So, I got the drops and AB to give him. Within a couple hours, Mason was awake...screaming his head off! I was relieved that it was not something that Papa had as a child. But, it is still a mystery on why he was affected like this!

But, since I worked in a hospital, we had the scopes everywhere, so if I suspected Mason had another infection, I would take him in to work and take a look. Then call the doc to order up the Rx. Pretty soon he went on Suspension like it talks about on the site, where Mason was on a daily dose of AB's for a few months. It seemed to work since he only had a couple more infections after.

The scopes are SO nice to have, and when the doc feels confident you know what to look for, they don't make you come in and spend money just to get the meds, if you need them.

Long...I know. It is one of my faults, sorry. But, GLTA...it is going to be a great win for a parent! You can also use it to look in the nose and back of the throat, just be sure to change the tip! Michele

  46. I didn't know a build up of ear wax could cause so many problems!

I have 2 little ones and it would be wonderful to be able to check their ears myself without dragging both of them to the doctor when one of them is sick.
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I didn't know you could check for infection yourself. This would help my family because my daughter has had to take her toddler to the doctor several times to check for infections. Such a waste of time and money if there isn't one. Great price for an at home tester!

    ReplyDelete
  48. My kids often don't act sick when they have an ear infection. I've often wished that I knew how to tell myself instead of having to take time off from work and take them in to the doctor - when the answer is often 'no' anyway... This would be a huge help! :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I was just wondering if such a product exists. My son was rushed to the hospital after a febrile seizure where he stopped breathing. We later found the cause of the spike was an ear infection. My little guy appears to be prone to fluid in his ears and thus infections are always a risk. This would help me to keep an eye on it without constantly having to go to the doctor if I think something is wrong.

    Thanks for the great giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I learned so much from this site -- thank you! I've been a bit worried my son has an ear infection, and it was reassuring to read that he probably doesn't...yet. One thing I didn't know was that children with ear infections find it uncomfortable to lie on their backs!

  68. I hadn't ever read about ruptured ear drums and I found that interesting. My husband had tubes put in his ears when he was young, and I wear hearing aids in both ears. Our children quite possibly could have ear problems. Nothing so far yet with our five month old but I think this would really help us to be better prepared for anything that does happen later on.

    Thanks!

  71. My friend was complaining that she couldn't hear. Since she is in the nursing field this isn't a good thing. I suggested she see a Dr. The Doctor examined her ears and then retrieved " Something" from her ear the size of the end of a Q-tip. Since I can't hear either, this tool would be useful for pre-assessment.

    ReplyDelete
  72. On the website I was shocked to read that it's not recommended by ENT's to stick anything in your ear that is smaller than your elbow! WOW. So what do we have Q-tips for?

This give away for an Otoscope would come in super handy at my house! My youngest boy has had two sets of tubes put in his ear due to the countless number of ear infections. It would be nice to self-diagnose the ear problems at home before rushing off to the doctor's office!

  82. OH wow, what an amazing product & website. I could have really used this with my oldest daughter who ended up getting tubes done. Tessa gets terrible recurring infections and IF we catch them early enough, we usually are successful using homeopathics to treat. that's a BIG IF though as she doesnt usually complain until the situation is pretty serious. Being able to check her out at home would make it easier to catch before it becomes an emergency.

Do not try to clean out your ears by using a cotton bud.

What other uses are q-tips for.

  121. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Not only do I desire to keep an eye on my children's ears (I too have more than a quiver), but also my own. For some reason, the last few years, every time I get an ear infection, within 24 hours my eardrums rupture from it.

My one son has hearing issues off and on from fluid build up or wax build up. I can never tell which one it is without taking him to the doctor. The co-pay does not bother me so much, but the idea that my insurance has to pay over $100 just so I can be told if it is wax or fluid. That is wrong.

I love how the website shows us how to figure out if it is wax and how to clean it out.

Again, thank you so much and blessings to you and yours, Julianne

  122. I thought this was interesting: If you keep getting ears blocked with wax, it may be worth using a couple of drops of olive oil into each ear once or twice a week.

In my family we have very small ear canals and they're angled in a way that doesn't allow for good wax drainage so it's a constant problem in that our ears get clogged with wax and need to be cleaned out. Sometimes we have to go to the doctor and sometimes I can get them cleaned out myself. This would really help me see into the canals and check to see how much wax is left when I'm cleaning. I usually have no clue. It would be super handy for us to use.

  126. I didn't know that excess wax can cause deafness, or that I shouldn't use ear swabs to clean out the wax. I sure could use one of these to see inside my sons ears.

  129. I had terrible problems with ear wax as a kid and had to get my ears flushed out regularly. It was really yucky. Now my daughter is starting to have ear issues and I'd love to be able to tell if it's wax or an infection. I found the information on infections most useful. Thanks!

  130. There was a lot of useful information on the site. I didn't know that sometimes a stronger medicine is needed. We have thankfully never had to use anything more than amoxicillin.

I used to have chronic ear infections as a child, and sadly, it looks like my kids just might be taking after their dear mother!
