Our 7 Qtpies

January 08, 2008

This is the new routine

Sam is accepting his bed now, as far as he knows it is his bed, and he knows he has to go to sleep there.
We go in and lay down with his drink. We turn on the music and light show. (as seen in the picture) We watch the monkey swing for the timed show. Then he is to snuggle down and go to sleep. Like he did at nap time.
Well, we thought that maybe Sam would sleep longer in his bed if someone were with him and decided Trinity could sleep with him, since she suddenly decided she is afraid of the top bunk. (aka: I want to watch the musical light show)
So, we are watching the music until it shuts off and then Sam, who is between us but facing Trinity, decides to reach up behind him and stroke my chin, my mouth then..... plant his thumb up my nose. He wasn't stroking me, he was searching for my nose. Where his thumb fits perfectly. Either nostril is fine. I pull away, he searches for the other side, maybe that one is OK to use. Um, no.
So then he waits.
Hmm, maybe I can put my finger up there. Um, no.
Then Trinity starts giggling.
So I have to move her back to her bed with the screaming.
Then we have to start the music show again to get Sam back in sleep mode. When it ends, he pulls the blanket up to his chin and snuggles it.
Then he hollers and kicks it off. He hates blankets. Then he snuggles it up to his chin and hugs it like a doll. Then he screams and kicks it off.
Then I distract him with a drink and he snuggles down for the night. One more try for the nose.
And off to sleep he goes!

1:10 Just as I start to drift off, Sam comes running across the house screaming at me for leaving him.
I tuck him back in and he goes right out. I put Trinity in the bed to have someone to snuggle.
Just as I dose back off....
1:29 Sam comes screaming across the house. He goes right back to sleep when I tuck him in.
2:02 Sam comes screaming across the house. He goes right back to sleep when I tuck him in.
2:29 Sam comes screaming across the house..........
I tell Donnie that next time he has to do it because I need some sleep.
3:30 Sam comes screaming across the house. I don't move. Donnie sits up and watches Sam come in our room and climb in our bed and snuggle down for the night.
Sam doesn't wake up again until 7am. He climbs up on top of my neck and snuggles back down. I sneak out from under him, and he still is sleeping peacefully.

And that was night 3.

I can SO identify with the struggles to get them to sleep in their own beds! My now-8-year-old was the hardest...I would still wake up every morning with him in our bed...until we moved in November. They DO grow out of it...it just takes some time.

My husband and I are way more hard-nosed that you are! In times like these, we locked the child in their room at night. Not with bread and water, though. He would have his bedtime routine, all of his needs would be taken care of, and then it would be time for bed. Once he was in his own bed, sleeping through the night, we ALL slept so much better! In the morning, I'd unlock the door before he was even up. It wasn't long before I didn't have to lock the door at all. He knew where he was supposed to sleep.

Very nice post that made me connect with fuzzy feelings. Sheesh, couple of years I'll be doing that again with grandkids.
