Ear infections are not all that common around here, but when they do happen we have very different symptoms on our kids. Hope-Anne has no symptom until it bursts. Trinity has been that way a bit, too, but sometimes she will show signs of grumpiness, but we don't know why. Samuel pulls at his ears and doesn't sleep well.
Donnie lost most of his hearing and had ringing in his ears. And the most annoying part was that he could hear everything super loud that goes on in his body, like chewing or walking! He was diagnosed with an ear infection, but nothing would make it go away. Even 3 months of antibiotics. He has had his ear drum drained and wax cleaned out, but still his hearing is going away again.

My daughter had reoccurent ear infections for years! We were literally in the dr's office at least twice a month just to get her ears checked. I would love to have this at home. Wow, I didn't know they sold these to the general public. For any parent who has stayed up all night with a child suffering from an ear ache this would be a great tool to have! I've found tylenol and warm compresses on the ear helps... but it doesn't cure the ache... unfortunately.

My daughter just suffered two ear infections (simultaneous) while we were on a family vacation. She was in such distress and we had no idea it was an ear infection because she'd never had one before. My mom had an otoscope growing up, but I haven't been able to find a good one to use with my kids. I bought a cheapo one at Walgreen's but it fell apart completely. I would really love to have this! $20 a pop on a co-pay because the baby is pulling at her ears is getting expensive. I think we've probably spent $200 on suspected ear infections in 2 and a half years, and she's only had one!!

I always thought batting or pulling their ears was a good indication of an infection, but, I guess not for younger babes.
My son suffered years with ear infections. The first time he was a few months old. He went to sleep one day and would not wake up except to take a few sips of food, and hardly woke for that. No fever at all. When I took him to the doc about 2 days later, he was not getting enough food, and still would not wake up for anything!
I laid him on the table and the doc says..so what is wrong? I started crying since my husband had a history of coma's as a child, and I was worried out of my mind! I pick up Mason's arm and it just dropped to the table, Mason did not even stir. I tried to wake him...he would not wake up!
No fever I said through my tears.
So, the doc took his temp and he did have a low grade fever...99.9. Then Doc looked in his ears and found that both ears were flaming red and he showed me. Doc was beside himself that Mason was not screaming his head off in pain! Me too!! He had never seen this happen before in a baby or child. Mason was practically comatose! I wonder if this ever happened to anyone else, I have not seen or heard of anyone yet.
So, I got the drops and AB to give him. Within a couple hours, Mason was awake...screaming his head off! I was relieved that it was not something that Papa had as a child. But, it is still a mystery on why he was affected like this!
But, since I worked in a hospital, we had the scopes everywhere, so if I suspected Mason had another infection, I would take him in to work and take a look. Then call the doc to order up the Rx. Pretty soon he went on Suspension like it talks about on the site, where Mason was on a daily dose of AB's for a few months. It seemed to work since he only had a couple more infections after.
The scopes are SO nice to have, and when the doc feels confident you know what to look for, they don't make you come in and spend money just to get the meds, if you need them.
Long...I know. It is one of my faults, sorry. But, GLTA...it is going to be a great win for a parent! You can also use it to look in the nose and back of the throat, just be sure to change the tip! Michele

I didn't know you could check for infection yourself. This would help my family because my daughter has had to take her toddler to the doctor several times to check for infections. Such a waste of time and money if there isn't one. Great price for an at home tester!

On their website, I was surprised to learn how ear was is made "The skin cells lining our outer ear canals include tiny glands, similar to sweat glands, which produce wax." I never knew that.

I too am surprised at the wax photos! I would love this to know when my son is being cranky as opposed to having a sketchy looking ear.
I was just wondering if such a product exists. My son was rushed to the hospital after a febrile seizure where he stopped breathing. We later found the cause of the spike was an ear infection. My little guy appears to be prone to fluid in his ears and thus infections are always a risk. This would help me to keep an eye on it without constantly having to go to the doctor if I think something is wrong.

I hadn't ever read about ruptured ear drums and I found that interesting. My husband had tubes put in his ears when he was young, and I wear hearing aids in both ears. Our children quite possibly could have ear problems. Nothing so far yet with our five month old but I think this would really help us to be better prepared for anything that does happen later on.

My friend was complaining that she couldn't hear. Since she is in the nursing field this isn't a good thing. I suggested she see a Dr. The Doctor examined her ears and then retrieved " Something" from her ear the size of the end of a Q-tip. Since I can't hear either, this tool would be useful for pre-assessment.
On the website I was shocked to read that it's not recommended by ENT's to stick anything in your ear that is smaller than your elbow! WOW. So what do we have Q-tips for?

My 2 1/2 year old has never had an ear infection although as first time parents there were a few times she would be fussy and tugging and we thought she may have had one. I now have a three week old and I'd love to be able to tell if he's got one or not instead of going to the ped. and having them tell us he's just cranky and likes to grab his ear.

I learned a lot from the site, one thing I didn't know was that boosting the immune system would help prevent ear infections. This device would sure come in handy here. Just this morning we were at the store and my son pulled on his ear and said it hurt but he couldn't tell me if the inside or outside hurt, so here we go to the doctor.
OH wow, what an amazing product & website. I could have really used this with my oldest daughter who ended up getting tubes done. I have to admit that I was surprised to learn that even with ear tubes in a person can still get ear infections (as often as they did prior). I was under the impression they would stop them once inserted. Huh.
I grew up with swimmers ear so I am always trying to make sure my daughter does not have the same issues that I did. This would go a long way in keeping me on top of any rising issues before they get out of control.

I work in early intervention. We have a lot of kids who have speech delays because of repeat ear infections. My daughter has had a ruptured ear drum and has tons of ear wax.

Tessa gets terrible recurring infections and IF we catch them early enough, we usually are successful using homeopathics to treat. that's a BIG IF though as she doesnt usually complain until the situation is pretty serious. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Not only do I desire to keep an eye on my children's ears (I too have more than a quiver), but also my own. For some reason, the last few years, every time I get an ear infection, within 24 hours my eardrums rupture from it.
My one son has hearing issues off and on from fluid build up or wax build up. I can never tell which one it is without taking him to the doctor. The co-pay does not bother me so much, but the idea that my insurance has to pay over $100 just so I can be told if it is wax or fluid. That is wrong.
I love how the website shows us how to figure out if it is wax and how to clean it out.

I thought this was interesting: If you keep getting ears blocked with wax, it may be worth using a couple of drops of olive oil into each ear once or twice a week.

In my family we have very small ear canals and they're angled in a way that doesn't allow for good wax drainage so it's a constant problem in that our ears get clogged with wax and need to be cleaned out. Sometimes we have to go to the doctor and sometimes I can get them cleaned out myself. This would really help me see into the canals and check to see how much wax is left when I'm cleaning. I usually have no clue. It would be super handy for us to use.

Ears have been a problem throughout my years. I am wondering if those ear candles or cones will help with ear wax problems. It would surely help to see down the ear canal.

My 6 year old got his 1st ear infection, a month later the fluid was still there. Good thing we recently got a new pediatrician that really looked and ran a few tests (hearing and how much fluid in the ear).

Wow, this is neat. My son doesn't show signs of ear infections until they're really bad, so it would help to take a look when he's just not acting like himself.

I like that it give a chart on what to look for in the eardrum. I've had so many ear infections as a child the doctor said he's amazed I can hear. I want better for my children.
