Family Review Network sent me a movie to review. Then She Found Me is a movie directed by Helen Hunt based on a book by Elinor Lipman. Starring Helen Hunt, Matthew Broderick, Collin Furth, and Bette Midler. With an all-star cast such as this, I fully expected a riveting and funny movie. I was greatly disappointed.
Helen Hunt plays April, a 39 year adopted woman who wants nothing more than to become a mother. Broderick plays April's husband, Ben, for all of 2 minutes in the film. He is immature and a mama's boy. Furth plays April's new love interest, a divorced father of 2, who is truly messed up. Bette Midler plays April's birth mother, who is not only eccentric, but also more than a little bit of a lier.
April's life is one messed up scene after another. She gets married, tries for a baby, and her husband ups and leaves. She finds a messed up guy, her adoptive mother dies, and her birth mother shows up. It only gets messier from there.
The movie is billed as a romantic comedy. It is neither romantic, nor funny. That disappointed me a great deal.
However, there was some great acting. Bette Midler pulled off her overly eccentric character quite well. If you are a Bette Midler fan, you'll want to see this movie. If Hunt was going for making us not like her character, she pulled it off. I can't even bring myself to speak of Broderick's character, it was awful. (though not the acting, just the character, a big change for him!) Furth was fantastic and sexy (love his accent!). His character is so incredibly messed up, and he made it adorable.
The story line was solid, but there wasn't enough going on to bring you to love the characters enough to care. I didn't cry at all, and normally I would in many of the situations in the movie.
