MRSA Awareness

Recently I was watching Dr. G Medical Examiner (I even eat while watching it, and that makes the kids crazy! LOL) and she was trying to find out what killed a young man. The only thing that he had complained of before getting sick was spider bites. His wife was also afflicted with them. It turned out that they both had MRSA (pronounced mersa), but his wife was able to fight it off.
MRSA is a very contagious staph infection. MRSA stands for Methicillan-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. Every year more than 90,000 people in America contract this life-threatening staph infection. MRSA used to be only associated with hospitals, but now the incidence of community-borne infections is on the rise. You can contract it anywhere. Your day care center, the gym, the grocery store, anywhere people touch things.

Stop MRSA Now.org is out there informing people about this dangerous infection and how to avoid getting it.
One of our concerns would be through sports or through the schools. Here are some tips to avoid contracting community borne MRSA:

Scrub up - Wash hands for at least 15 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand rub sanitizer, especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Make hand washing and/or hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the school.

Wipe it down - Use a bleach solution to disinfect hard surfaces, including desks, tabletops, doorknobs and light switches.

Cover your cuts - Cover any nicks or wounds with a clean, dry bandage until healed. Teachers should refer students with open cuts to the school nurse.

Keep to yourself - Encourage students not to share personal items.

Use a barrier - Keep a towel or clothing between skin and shared equipment.

Hit the showers - Athletes and coaches participating in sports involving close contact, such as wrestling and football, should shower immediately after each practice, game or match.

Don't play dirty - Athletes should wash all athletic clothing after each use.

I am a freak when it comes to washing my hands. I sing London bridge is falling down 2 times that way I know I spent 15 seconds washing my hands. It was something I learned when I went to school to be a PA Physcian asst.
