Our 7 Qtpies

November 20, 2008

We made it to Texas!

Have you ever heard the expression "When it rains, it pours" from anyone?
It could appear that way for us, but really I feel good and happy with life, in spite of some of the frustrating things that are going on.
It makes for good blogging material anyway!

Donnie and Kaytlin drove to Minneapolis on Tuesday night, Donnie had an interview and then needed to pick up the rental car. Kaytlin would drive the second car home. When he got there, after a great interview, the rental car company informed Donnie that by "unlimited mileage" they really meant "150 miles a day." That would more than double the cost of our rental car! No can do. So he walked away and asked me to start looking for a new rental car. For that night. At 6PM. When ALL car rental places close down for the night.
All except the airport rentals.
So I started calling the airport branches. No cars. Nope, nothing left, nobody has any left.
Bugger!
I prayed, my mom asked her sister to help pray, and I moved on down the list just in case. And I found one! But we had to get to the airport to pick it up. Kaytlin was at a meeting and Donnie's dad isn't comfortable driving anymore, much less in the cities at night.
We made arrangements to leave one of our cars at Donnie's sister's for the week. Then I packed as fast as I could! I only forgot my black boots (which technically Donnie forgot, since I had them with all the suitcases) and the kids' special drinks and fruit snacks.

While Donnie and I were switching carseats to the new car, Donnie's sister and her husband were visiting with Trinity (Sam wouldn't let us out of his sight). They asked her what she wanted for Christmas. "I want everything I see." At least she is being honest??? LOL They were cracking up!

We finally got on the road at 11pm.

Things moved along swimmingly! The kids were watching their new DVD's on a borrowed player, and even went to sleep nicely.
But Donnie and I were so tired after long days BEFORE packing, and just couldn't keep driving. So, somewhere in Iowa we pulled over to sleep at a rest stop. It wouldn't be so bad to just let the car run for a couple of hours while we snoozed.
But it was.
Donnie wouldn't let me pack blankets for him and I, too much room. So we had to make-do with our winter coats. Sam, on the other hand, wouldn't even wear his pajamas. He was sleeping with no shirt on, while we had goosebumps with our winter coats all zipped up. If we got the car warm enough that we didn't have goose bumps, Sam would start crying because he was hot. So we'd shut the car off until we were freezing. Then we'd turn the heater back on, until Sam would scream because he was hot.
So not fun.

So we gave up and got back to driving.

Breakfast went great. The kids ate a little, we ate a little. Then we let the kids run around a play while we arranged the car. Back in and watching videos, all was smooth sailing!

Until a little later. When Trinity became immune to BOTH types of car sickness medicine.

She puked all over the rental car. We decided to have an early lunch at a playland. Usually getting out of the car makes her feel better.

Um, sure, while she is OUT of the car.

The puking continued until we got to the hotel at 1:30am Thursday morning.

Now to find a laundromat.

2 people think my kids are qtpies:

I would imagine one of the things you tried on her was Dramamine, right? I used to give Molly a 1/2 of one when she was little. The only thing is, you have to give it to them an hour before you travel or something like that. Molly got so bad for a while, that she would get carsick on the way to Walmart, less than 10 miles away!
