Alzheimer's is a very progressive disease that strips away your memory and damages your nerves in your brain until you are just a shell of your former self. Early detection is important in order to help slow the disease.
Many places are having the free screenings and everyone should encourage their parents and aging family members to go get screened for Alzheimer's.
Spread the word to your family and friends on how to age successfully:
- Visit your doctor regularly
- Follow a healthy diet and take vitamins, including vitamins C and E, and folic acid.
- Stimulate your brain regularly, reading, crossword puzzles, play bridge with your friends
- Manage stress through techniques such as relaxation, meditation and prayer
- Treat depression, the elderly who are depressed have higher rates of dementia, lower quality of life and higher rates of death
- Exercise daily, physical activity significantly lessens the chance of cardiovascular complications that could cause dementia
- Limit alcohol consumption, which has a direct toxic effect on the brain that adds to the loss of nerve cells and synapses
- Most important: Be social, maintaining a network of friends will lessen the likelihood of isolation and depression while increasing the overall level of brain stimulation.
It is important to search for a cure for Alzheimer's disease. However, we should not forget to take care of those who are stricken with the disease. You can donate a holiday gift to help the cause.
My grandfather suffered from the disease, and it was a horrible life for him and a terrifying memory for a little girl to watch her grandpa change so drastically into someone else. So, please make sure to encourage your family to get screened and donate to the the AFA if you are able.
